The climate of Pilanesberg (South Africa)
Pilanesberg is a popular Natural Reserve just north west of the cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria. This area is very suitable to shoot the Big Five; with a camera that is. Pilanesberg has a warm steppe climate with very mild winters and warm summers (type Bsh according to the Köppen-Geiger climate classification). The amount of precipitation is quite low with 500 millimetres on a yearly basis. Although Pilanesberg doesn’t really have a dry or wet period there is a distinct difference between summer and winter. During local summer months which last from November to March Pilanesberg is much wetter than during the winter. The rain fall in combination with high temperatures causes for plant life to flourish in early spring.
Who ever wants to go on a safari needs to bear in mind that animals are harder to spot because of the overgrowth. Predators such as the lion are much lazier during this period and will not spring into action until night time. The best period to go on a safari is from April to September. During the months of June and July subzero temperatures are not uncommon. An extra jacket is recommended for those who go on safari during the winter. When temperatures reach a pleasant 20 degrees Celsius in the afternoon it can be taken of again.

More climate information
Climate figures are very useful but don’t present a general impression of the climate and the eventual weather circumstances within a certain period. The figures don’t always reflect the chance of wintry weather, extreme heat or hurricanes. That is why we offer useful extra climate information for each month of the year:
