The climate of Valais (Switzerland)
The canton of Valais mainly consists of high mountains. This means average temperatures are much lower. Valais is a popular winter sports destination during the winter because the peaks are covered in a thick blanket of snow then. Valais is also a good family vacation destination. Valais has 40 luge tracks. Because of the high altitude snow is guaranteed here. Even during the summer you can go skiing. Valais also has many footpaths that can be enjoyed and there are several possibilities for mountaineering. The source of the Rhône River is in this canton. Because Valais is located in the south-western part of Switzerland it is protected from rain. This region is among the driest in Switzerland. For example: the city of Sion gets less than 500 millimeters of annual rain.
