The climate of As Suwayda (Syria)
As Suwayda is a mainly Druze city located in the southwestern part of Syria. This religious community settled primarily in Syria, Libanon, Israel and Jordan. There is only little known about this mysterious religion. The Druze call themselves ‘ Unitarians’ and are a monotheistic community. The city was founded by the Nabataeans, nomadic people who roamed the Middle East. In the ancient part of the city the Basilica of St. Sergius can be found which was built in the 5th century AD. The temple of Dionysus-Dushara can be found here as well. As Suwayda is located in the vicinity of the border with Jordan. As Suwaydah has a Mediterranean climate influenced by the Mediterranean Sea with pleasant summers and mild winters. Winters are colder here than in other coastal places. However, extremes in weather are uncommon. Subzero temperatures during the night as well as snowfall are not uncommon. Summers are pleasantly warm without getting too hot, summers are dry though. Precipitation figures are low all year round. During the winter precipitation figures are slightly higher.
